Although not in the realm of crochet squares, the Mail Order brands did market a fair number of filet crochet squares, typically in multiple sizes.  These delicate designs primarily featured flowers, birds and butterflies.  The square, larger than medallions (motif), typical range in size of a small 4", and up.  They are used to create cloths, spreads, runners ... household items of your choice.
